Living options for those with a disability
Previous Living Options
Before the Concierge Supported Independent Living model of support (SIL) funding structure was brought in by the NDIS, young people with a disability had limited living options. These included living at home with family, or where family were unable to support, living in aged care or group homes. Whilst group homes are the current prominent option in Australia, the rise of modern housing that supports inclusion and independence has seen an increase in housing options.
The SIL model of care provides new living scenarios and housing options regardless of your level of care needs by providing additional occasional support, consistent support or emergency assistance.

What is the Concierge model of support?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS funded model of shared accommodation. Terms used prior to the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for Concierge Supported Independent Living that you may have heard of are Disability Accommodation or Group Homes. All of these accommodation types refer to living scenarios where individuals are supported to live independently with staff dropping in, being onsite for emergencies or staff being on hand for support 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
The Concierge support term is a new concept, as it allows for you to pick and choose the supports that you receive and who you receive them from. This is revolutionary as it gives you choice and control over how you live your life.
Where are Concierge Support Homes?
With the rise of socially conscious support, Concierge Support housing and disability housing options in general are increasingly being integrated into communities so that residents can contribute to society and live the lives that they want to live. Homes are generally in apartment style buildings, with support workers living on-site in a separate part of the residence. Homes are in the communities where we work and live, and are tailored to individuals support requirements. Your support coordinator will be able to advise on concierge supported independent living options near you.
What kind of support would I receive in a Concierge Support residence?
Along with having the control and choice over who provides your day to day support assistance, concierge residents have the ability to choose specific times that they want to access their onsite concierge support staff (within their NDIS plan). Concierge staff and daily supported independent living staff can be from the same or different organisations – it is the individual’s choice.
Concierge support staff provide:
- On-call overnight support
- Unexpected support
- Emergency support
- Extra person support eg assistance with a hoist transfer
- Day-to-day tasks if you choose to use the one provider rather than several
