Who provides disability support

Other than family and friends, disability support is mainly provided by Disability Support Workers. Be sure to look into your support workers qualifications depending on the support that you need.

Disability Support workers provide care and help to people living in the community with mental health conditions or a physical disability with the aim of improving their client’s quality of life and growing independence. There are three main areas in which Disability Support workers support their clients, with each individual requiring support relevant to their needs. These areas include personal care, household support and emotional support.

Personal Care Support includes helping individuals with general hygiene, dressing/undressing, mobility support and support with disability programs.

Household support includes helping individuals with general household chores and can include shopping for food, cleaning, doing laundry and ironing, cooking and providing transport to access medical and community appointments.

Emotional support is so important for a disability support worker to provide. If you feel isolated or withdrawn from society because of your disability, you deserve understanding and compassion and someone to talk to and have fun with. Disability support workers can also help to coordinate social events.

Depending on the level of support that you require, Disability Support Workers may visit regularly or sometimes live in your home with you.
